MTV Calls Avril Lavigne “The Exception” to the ‘Good Girl Bad’

by User ImageColleen on April 30th, 2008

Miley_Cyrus_spMTV is weighing in on the Miley Cyrus “topless pictures” controversy.  The editorial piece talks about other young female celebrities who are “good girls gone bad.”  Among that list are:

  • Britney Spears - Broke free of her Mouseketeer past with the “…Baby One More Time” Catholic-schoolgirl video, the provacative Rolling Stone cover at age 17, and rumors of breast implants.
  • Christina Aguilera - Also shed the Mouseketeer image with “Genie in a Bottle,” the sexy lingerie in the “Lady Marmalade” video, nude Rolling Stone cover, and of course the entire album that was Stripped - topless cover, tattoos, piercings, & all.
  • Lindsay Lohan - Started out innocent enough in “The Parent Trap” and “Freaky Friday” and ended up a drug addict, alcoholic, in jail, three times in rehab, and lots of paparazzi pictures of her not wearing underwear.
  • Vanessa Hudgens - Went from tween queen thanks to “High School Musical” to naked photo circulating around the Internet all by the age of 18!
  • Jamie Lynn Spears - Was known as the cute, innocent member of the Spears family as the star of Nickelodeon’s “Zoey 101″ until she ended up pregnant at age 16.

Now the part about Avril Lavigne.  Here’s the exact quote of what the editorial wrote about our gal:

If all of the above are cautionary tales about teen girls who are in a big hurry to shed their virginal “good girl” persona and morph into sexy women before they could vote (or, in some cases, drive), Canadian singer Lavigne is the antidote to that bullet train to hormone-ville. Debuting at age 18 with Let Go, the singer’s skate-rat image included baggy pants and T-shirts with her then-ubiquitous men’s tie instead of body-hugging miniskirts and dresses. For years, Lavigne studiously avoided sexing up her image, playing the role of tomboy, until around 2006, when the now-married 23-year-old began wearing more revealing clothes and posing for photos in provocative outfits. She really upped the ante in a recent Blender cover on which she was seemingly topless with a banner headline across her chest that read, “Hell Yeah, I’m Hot!”

She always played it cool and ignored the Britney/Lindsay/Paris crowd and she’s finally being recognized for it!  Good for you, Avril!

Avril has, refreshingly, always been quite “above” that whole scene which was the catalyst for her appeal. Watching her evolve in the way she has has been nothing short of fascinating.

I’m glad Avril’s getting the positive attention she deserves. I agree with the above poster’s comment about Avril ascending ‘above’ that whole drama/image scene. I suspect that others can learn a thing or two from her.

Umm, I agree with all the girls on the list except Miley. I read she APPEARED topless, except that she was actually wearing something underneath the sheet. And, oh whew, happy that Hilary’s not on the list…yet. I’m glad for Avril though. I always thought if I become famous, I’m gonna dress the way I dress, sorta like Avril before. I love jeans, hate skirts, only like long dresses if any, hate low cut shirts, etc, etc. Oh, and favorite t-shirt colors red, blue, and black. But hey, long sleeve black shirt with a dark pink short sleeve jacket would be cool. ^_^
